On Wednesday, July 24 at 10:00 a.m., the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will mark up the Supporting Academic Freedom through Regulatory Relief Act (H.R. 2637). The markup will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
In 2010 and 2011 the Department of Education advanced a package of “program integrity" regulations. Several of these regulations have the potential to create significant financial and bureaucratic problems for higher education institutions nationwide.
The Supporting Academic Freedom through Regulatory Relief Act, introduced by Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Rep. Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), will eliminate three of the most burdensome “program integrity" regulations: the gainful employment, state authorization, and federal credit hour regulations. The bill will also prohibit the Department of Education from issuing additional regulations on related matters until after Congress reauthorizes the Higher Education Act, protecting students and higher education institutions from future federal overreach.
