NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy on NHTSA, NSC Roadway Fatality Data

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy issued the following statement Wednesday:

“Data released today from both NHTSA and the National Safety Council (NSC) reinforce the message I shared earlier today with state highway and transportation leaders: There is a public health crisis on our roads, and it’s only getting worse.

“NHTSA confirms 2020 was the dangerous turning point we all thought it to be — though it was even more devastating than we had feared for pedestrian road users. NSC projections indicate this is far more than a pandemic-induced aberration.

“Taken together, these reports deliver a one-two punch that begs the question: how many loved ones do we have to lose before we change our approach?

“NTSB calls on stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels to implement our road safety recommendations, starting with the Safe System Approach. It’s the only way we get to the entirely achievable goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”

Chair Homendy delivered keynote remarks at the 2022 AASHTO Washington Briefing luncheon hosted jointly with The Road Gang earlier on Wednesday.

NTSB has placed adoption of the Safe System Approach on its Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvements. More information: https://go.usa.gov/xtn5P
