Oversight Committee Republicans Scrutinize President’s ‘Jobs Saved’ Claim

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on June 11, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold a press conference today at 1 pm in Rayburn 2203 on the Obama Administration’s claims that the stimulus has created or saved 150,000 jobs and will create or save 600,000 jobs in the next 100 days. While the Obama Administration, in January, predicted the stimulus would prevent the unemployment rate from rising above 8.0%, the unemployment rate is now 9.4% and rising - this represents a difference of 2.2 million lost jobs. While with the stimulus the economy has lost significantly more jobs than the Obama Administration predicted, Administration figures, including the President, continue to tout claims of jobs “saved or created." These claims have not been verified by Federal agencies such as the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) or the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Administration has refused to disclose the formula it uses for calculating claims. Oversight Committee Republicans will explain why the Administration’s claims represent an abuse of trust and may, in fact, be fraudulent.
