Washington, DC- Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Rep. Danny K. Davis, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Health Care, DC, Census and National Archives, wrote to Chairmen Darrell Issa and Trey Gowdy outlining flaws in a Republican staff report claiming that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will remove millions of people from the tax rolls, increase the federal budget deficit, and create economic disincentives for marriage.
“Key calculations were wrong, multiple statements were erroneous, and the report’s central conclusions were unsupported by the evidence," Cummings and Davis wrote. “We do not know what was accomplished by the hasty publication of a partisan and flawed Republican staff report."
The report, which Members did not have an opportunity to review prior to publication, was released to press ten minutes before a hearing on this topic on October 27. MIT Economist Jonathan Gruber has also exposed flaws in the report, noting in The New Republic that “some of the claims are wrong-headed. The rest are simply wrong."
