Washington, DC -- Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, called on House Speaker John Boehner to meet with Attorney General Eric Holder to resolve the dispute over requested documents regarding the Committee's investigation of Operation Fast and Furious.
"I'm calling on Speaker Boehner to come forth and show the strong leadership that I know he will, and sit down with the Attorney General to resolve this matter. The Attorney General has made it clear that he is willing to work with this Congress," said Cummings, appearing on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace.
Attorney General Holder has offered repeatedly to meet with the Speaker and House leadership to negotiate a resolution, but the Speaker's office has taken no action, other than rushing to schedule a House floor vote on the contempt resolution introduced by Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, which passed out of the Committee only four days ago.
To date, the Department of Justice has turned over 7,600 pages of documents relating to Fast and Furious; provided 1,300 pages of internal deliberative documents about a letter to Senator Charles Grassley on February 4, 2011; and made two dozen Department officials available for testimony and interviews before the Committee. Attorney General Holder has testified nine times before Congress on this issue.
