HEARING ADVISORY: Freedom of Information Act Reform, Improved Transparency of Federal Government

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on Feb. 25, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON- Friday, February 27th, the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Government Operations will hold a hearing to examine the use of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests as a tool for government transparency. There have been numerous reforms made to strengthen FOIA since its passage in 1966. Despite these reforms, many transparency groups have reported continued problems with FOIA, including excessive fees, overuse of exemptions, and backlogged requests.

The hearing, “Ensuring Government Transparency Through FOIA Reform" will explore potential reforms to ensure accountability within the FOIA process.
