Chairman Boozman calls for strengthening domestic markets for American farm products

U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Chairman John Boozman announced on Mar. 10 the start of a series of hearings aimed at gathering input from agriculture industry leaders to improve policies that could increase consumption of American-grown agricultural products.

The hearings come at a time when many U.S. farmers are facing significant financial challenges. Boozman said that current conditions mean "if you are putting something in the ground, you are losing money," and noted that no row crop is currently profitable. He highlighted that Arkansas now leads the nation in Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies, describing it as "a sobering statistic."

Boozman also addressed broader issues affecting agriculture, including high input costs, labor expenses, interest rates, low commodity prices, and trade difficulties. He said these factors should prompt policymakers to consider the future direction of U.S. agriculture. "It is clear that China is not a dependable trading partner and that Brazil is doing everything it can to take over the agriculture markets that traditionally have been dominated by the United States," Boozman said.

He commended efforts by the administration to pursue new markets and hold trading partners accountable but emphasized the need to develop stronger domestic markets less vulnerable to foreign influences. "My hope for today is that we start exploring new domestic opportunities for our farmers," he said during his opening statement.

The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee addresses issues related to food, nutrition, hunger, and rural affairs both domestically and internationally according to its official website. The committee operates as part of the U.S. Senate according to its official website and comprises 23 senators who provide bipartisan oversight according to its official website. It manages policies concerning agricultural economics, human nutrition, crop insurance, forestry management, pests and pesticides control, as well as rural development according to its official website. Boozman serves as chair with Amy Klobuchar acting as ranking member according to its official website.

The committee features five subcommittees specializing in areas such as commodities regulation, rural development initiatives, conservation programs, food and nutrition policy oversight, and livestock safety measures according to its official website. It provides comprehensive legislative oversight for agricultural research funding, price supports systems and international trade agreements while focusing on commodity supports programs, conservation efforts and food safety standards according to its official website.

Looking ahead, Boozman said he intends to continue discussions with processors, manufacturers and retailers about developing domestic markets: "Domestic market development will remain my priority as Chairman."
