Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement in response to the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel opinion on access to documents for the Department’s Inspector General:
“Both the Inspector General and the Justice Department have been operating in good faith during this process of determining the legal requirements with respect to access to records. In this case, Justice Department officials stated from the outset that they would support a legislative fix if necessary, and following yesterday’s opinion from the Office of Legal Counsel, I believe it is warranted. If the Department and the Inspector General legitimately disagree about access to records, there must be a process in place to resolve that disagreement quickly. I fully support Inspector General Horowitz and all inspectors general in carrying out their critical mission on behalf of the American people."
