Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette’s announcement of criminal charges against Michigan Department of Environmental Quality employees Steven Busch and Michael Prysby in connection with his ongoing investigation into the Flint water crisis:
“The criminal charges against MDEQ officials are one step towards justice for the families of Flint who were poisoned as a result of the actions of Governor Snyder’s administration. Governor Snyder can hold all the photo ops he wants drinking filtered water now, but that doesn’t help the residents of Flint who were drinking poisoned, unfiltered water for more than a year. The people of Flint deserve accountability for the actions of Governor Snyder and his officials that caused this crisis."
On April 7, 2016, Cummings sent Governor Snyder a letter requesting an in-person meeting in Michigan, and he asked that Mayor Weaver, City Council President Nelson, and Rep. Kildee be allowed to attend. To date, Snyder has not responded.
