Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement after House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes announced his recusal from the Committee’s investigation of President Trump and Russia:
“The decision by Chairman Nunes to recuse himself is appropriate given his work on the Trump transition team and recent activities at the White House, but the Trump Administration still needs to explain who was involved in working with him to launder information and spin these conspiracy theories. Going forward, the only way to begin restoring confidence and integrity in the House investigation is for the Intelligence Committee to immediately place the public hearing with Sally Yates back on the calendar when Congress comes back in session in two weeks, and then to work in a bipartisan fashion and rise above politics to schedule additional public hearings with appropriate officials."
Last Friday, Cummings sent a letter to White House Counsel Donald McGahn and National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster asking when they became aware that their own staff members reportedly contacted Chairman Nunes, facilitated his entry into the White House complex, and provided him with access to review classified information. Cummings requested the information by this Friday.
