The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Apr. 10 that the federal budget deficit reached $1.2 trillion in the first half of fiscal year 2026, which is $139 billion less than during the same period last year. House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington released a statement addressing this reduction.

This change is important because it signals a decrease of more than ten percent in the federal deficit compared to last year, according to Arrington. He said, "The non-partisan CBO recently did a comparison of the first six months of last fiscal year (FY25) with the first six months of this fiscal year (FY26). The report showed that the combination of savings from cutting bureaucratic waste and increased revenue from tariffs helped lower the deficit by $139b, which is over 10%. If we continue cutting waste and fraud from the federal government as well as incentivizing economic growth, we will stabilize the debt and put our nation on a credible path to balance going to 3% deficit-to-GDP from 6% over the next several years."

The House Budget Committee works closely with other key committees such as Ways and Means and Appropriations within the U.S. House of Representatives according to its official website. The committee has responsibilities that include overseeing federal spending and developing budget resolutions aimed at promoting fiscal responsibility according to its official website.

Arrington has served as chairman of this committee according to its official website. The committee also plays a role in influencing budget management through tools like reconciliation according to its official website, collaborates with the Congressional Budget Office for independent analyses according to its official website, and prepares annual budget resolutions along with guidelines for spending targets according to its official website.

Looking ahead, Arrington said further efforts focused on reducing government waste and encouraging economic growth could help move toward balancing future budgets.
