Washington, D.C. -This week, Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, held a joint hearing with the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Intelligence, Emerging Threats and Capabilities on “Securing the Nation’s Internet Architecture."
TAKEAWAYS
* The Chairmen, Ranking Members, and witnesses discussed the importance of information sharing between federal agencies, the private sector, and international partners to defend against potential cyber and physical threats, enabling the collective security and resiliency of the global internet system.
* Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy Ed Wilson testified that the greatest threat to U.S. and global internet infrastructure is the risk that a foreign adversary could miscalculate the unknown second, or third-order effects of their attempts to tamper with critical telecommunications infrastructure.
* The Chairmen and Committee Members encouraged representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration to coordinate effectively to protect the various components of the nation’s internet architecture and reduce stove-piping across their respective agencies.
