Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement after the Trump Administration finalized a rule that would weaken protections for student survivors and strip the responsibility of schools to protect students from sexual assault and harassment:
“The Trump Administration’s final Title IX rule threatens access to equal education for survivors of sexual assault. There is never a good time to degrade protections for sexual abuse survivors, but this is a particularly wrong-headed moment as students and educational institutions across the country are struggling under the weight of a global pandemic.
“Nearly three months ago, I sent a letter to Secretary DeVos raising concerns about this rulemaking process, but the Department so far has refused to provide the information and documents the Committee is seeking. Now that the rule is finalized, we will be pressing the Department to comply with oversight requests."
