Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued this statement following an announcement from Dr. Steve Dillingham, Director of the Census Bureau, informing Census Bureau staff about additional political appointees joining the Bureau’s policy team. Today’s appointments signal an unprecedented politicization of the Census Bureau:
“The decision to create two new senior positions at the Census Bureau and fill them with political operatives is yet another unprecedented attempt by the Trump Administration to politicize the 2020 Census. The move to increase the presence of starkly partisan allies in the Census Bureau comes after the Supreme Court struck down the Administration’s previous attempt to add an unlawful citizenship question to the 2020 Census. I urge the Administration to immediately stop using the Census for political gain and focus on the needs of our nation by ensuring a fair and accurate count."
