Chairwoman Maloney Issues Statement on GAO Report on Criminal Background Check System

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on July 8, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement after the non-partisan, independent Government Accountability Office released a report on the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS):

“The national criminal background check system saves lives by preventing guns from being purchased by those who shouldn’t have them, but it is only as good as the information our government agencies put into it. Troublingly, today’s report shows that the Attorney General has failed to provide clear guidance to ensure that federal agencies provide accurate and complete information into the database. The Attorney General must immediately provide this guidance and ensure that all federal agencies follow it."
