Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. James E. Clyburn, Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, issued the following statement on reports that the U.S. plans to purchase 500 million Pfizer vaccine doses to aid global vaccination efforts:

“I commend the Biden-Harris Administration’s planned purchase of 500 million life-saving vaccine doses to help ramp up global vaccination efforts. These vaccines will help to save lives and put an end to this pandemic.

“Even as vaccinations are free and available to all Americans over the age of 12, and cases and deaths in our country have dropped substantially, a significant majority of the world’s population has yet to have the opportunity to be inoculated against this deadly virus. It is our moral obligation to do all we can to ensure that all people are able to access this life-saving vaccine; millions of lives are on the line. In addition, inadequate global vaccination efforts increase the risk of vaccine-resistant variants emerging and threatening the progress we have made here at home. I am thankful to the Biden-Harris Administration for doing what is right and what is in the best interest of the American people."
