Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chair of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission requesting additional documents and information regarding the Commission’s ongoing efforts to investigate and crack down on spam robotexts.
“I want the American people to know about the important work that FCC is doing to protect them from spam robotexts," Chairman Krishnamoorthi wrote. “I also want to ensure that text scam artists face serious consequences for harming consumers."
The Chairman requested documents and information on investigations conducted by FCC related to spam robotexts from July 2021 to October 2021, and requested that the Commission provide the Subcommittee with monthly updates regarding the investigations.
In August 2021, Chairman Krishnamoorthi requested a briefing from FCC on its efforts to combat the rise in spam robotexts. On Sept. 16, 2021, FCC provided a briefing to Subcommittee staff and confirmed robotexts are a “growing problem" and that FCC wants to “clamp down on them." Following this conversation, in October, FCC announced plans to initiate a rulemaking to require wireless providers to block illegal text messages.
