State Department Counselor Derek Chollet recently met with Romania’s Senate president to discuss Romania’s intention to take in more than half a million refugees who fled Ukraine due to the crisis with Russia.

“Important meeting with RO Senate President Florin Citu @florincitu discussing Russia/Ukraine crisis and Romania’s resolve in receiving over 562,000 refugees,” Chollet said on Twitter March 28.

Citu also met with Manfred Weber, chairman of the European People's Party, March 15 to discuss the challenges the Romanian economy has had in relation to the Ukraine/Russia conflict, Weber said in a tweet.

Weber said the EPP “stands united” in support of their member parties facing the consequences of the war, which includes Romania, according to Twitter.

As of March 27, more than 3.8 million Ukrainian refugees have fled Ukraine, according to the Operational Data Portal. Romania reportedly accepted 595,868 Ukrainian refugees, second to Poland which has accepted approximately 2.3 million Ukrainian refugees.

The European Union said Ukrainian refugees are entitled to temporary protection that last for up to a year but is subject to change depending on developments in the Ukraine/Russia conflict, according to the European Commission. The rights granted to Ukrainians under temporary protection include "a residence permit, access to the labor market and housing, medical assistance and access to education for children."
