The U.S. Department of Transportation recently said that $2.9 billion in funding is available for major infrastructure projects.
According to a release, the funding has been made available through a combined Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) under President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Through the bill, three major discretionary grant programs will be combined into "one Multimodal Projects Discretionary Grant" which will allow the grants to be more available to different projects due to the accessibility.
“President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix our outdated infrastructure and invest in major projects for the future of our economy,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in the release. “Until now, we had limited ability to make awards beyond a certain level or to support projects with funding from multiple federal grant programs. Under this approach and with a major infusion of new funding, we have the capacity to green-light more transformational projects that will create good-paying union jobs, grow the economy, and make our transportation system safer and more resilient.”
$2.9 billion will become available through the grant and will be used to "fund major projects that are too large or complex for traditional funding programs." Projects over $100 million will receive 50% of funding for the project through the grant.
The grants are available through a competitive application process that considers what the goal of the project is. Projects which meet the goals of the DOT's rebuild America plan will be considered over those that don't.
The deadline for applications is 11:59 pm EDT on May 23.
