Lesslie Viguerie, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, was nominated as the next U.S. Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan.

Viguierie, who holds the rank of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for Central Asia and Pakistan Affairs in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, a State Department release said.

“Many things have changed over decades, but our overarching goals remain the same: sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” Viguerie said, according to the release.

Viguerie spent much of his nearly 30-year foreign service career in South and Central Asia, which the State Department said makes him a well-qualified candidate, along with management experience and his demonstrated ability to lead interagency teams and policy-oriented offices.

He has served as deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and minister-counselor for political affairs at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, the release stated.

Viguerie also served as the director for Europe and Asia in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs and director for Central Asia in the Bureau of South and Central Asia Affairs, according to the release. He’s served as the deputy political counselor at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, senior director of the Interagency Rule of Law Section at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, and External Political Relations chief at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, the release stated.

The Virginia native graduated from George Washington University and Catholic University of America, according to the release. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association and has received the Senior Foreign Service Performance Award.
