The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resource Conservation Service announced March 11 it will be extending the application deadline for organizations to apply for a Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities funding opportunity, due to high demand.

The popular program is funded through the USDA's Commodity Credit Corporation. The USDA extended the deadline in response to requests from several stakeholders in the program, according to the news release.

“There has been a high level of interest in the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities funding opportunity, and we want to ensure that a diverse applicant pool is able to apply," Robert Bonnie, Farm Production and Conservation under secretary, said. "USDA is extending the deadline for the funding opportunity to provide more time for these applications.”

With the funds, the program will finance pilot projects that create market opportunities for agricultural products with climate-conscious initiatives. The hope is the program can help expand the economy in an economically-friendly way.

The period for submissions to the program opened Feb. 7. The deadline for the first funding pool is now May 6, and the deadline for the second funding pool will be June 10.
