A Trans-Atlanta Data Privacy Framework between the United States and the European Union recognizes the importance of trusted data flows, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in a March 25 news release.

These data flows are critical after the COVID-19 pandemic for continued economic recovery and a shared commitment to data protection and the rule of law, she said.

“By ensuring a durable and reliable legal basis for trans-Atlantic data flows, we have paved the way for a more inclusive digital economy that will benefit American consumers and small businesses alike,” Raimondo said. “The framework lays the foundation for further economic cooperation and will allow American businesses to more effectively compete globally, while also ensuring that unprecedented commitments to strengthen privacy protections do not come at the cost of our national security interests at home and abroad.”

President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen made the announcement March 25 on the Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework, the release reported.

The historic cooperation between the governments enabled the creation of this framework, Raimondo said. The successful negotiations will help bring mutual benefit to businesses, workers and consumers.
