On March 11, Administrator Samantha Power met with World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine caused by Russia’s unprovoked invasion.
Administrator Power and Director-General Tedros discussed the deteriorating humanitarian conditions on the ground in Ukraine, in particular the immense health needs. They deplored the Russian attacks on hospitals and other medical facilities with Tedros sharing that Russian forces have hit at least 26 hospitals and clinics since it invaded 15 days ago. Administrator Power described USAID’s continued support for health programs in Ukraine.
Administrator Power thanked Director-General Tedros for WHO’s tireless work to provide desperately needed assistance despite the complex operational environment, difficult access, and safety and security challenges.
