Canceling FPS IT Contract Saves Taxpayer Money

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Homeland Security on April 5, 2012. It is reproduced in full below.

(WASHINGTON) - Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released the results of an audit of a Federal Protective Service contract in a report entitled "FPS' Exercise of a Contract Option for the Risk Assessment and Management Program (RAMP)" (OIG-12-67). The contract was canceled after an investigation by the Committee's minority staff. To date, $41 million has been spent on the Risk Assessment and Management Program (RAMP). RAMP was intended to be a risk assessment tool to manage the FPS workforce but it was grossly over budget and failed to fulfill its original goals. Cancellation of the contract saved the government over $13 million.

Congressman Thompson released the following statement with the report:

"While our oversight led to the cancellation of this contract and a $13 million savings for the American taxpayer, we cannot ignore the need for continuing reform at FPS. The current leadership at FPS is committed to reform and I will continue to oversee the operation of this agency. The safety of Federal facilities must be a major goal of the Department of Homeland Security."
