TWIC NPRM Comment Deadline Extended

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Homeland Security on May 6, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, received notice from Admiral R. J. Papp Jr., Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, that the USCG will extend the comment period for the TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) Reader NPRM (Notice of proposed rulemaking) by thirty days to June 20, 2013. This letter comes after Rep. Thompson and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) sent a letter in April requesting the extension.

Congressman Thompson released the following statement on the extension:

I am pleased that the Coast Guard listened to our concerns, extended the comment period for the TWIC rulemaking process, and held more public meetings across the country than had been initially noticed. Listening to a broad array of stakeholders is critical to ensuring this important but long delayed program is properly implemented.
