(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the massacre and mass shooting in Orlando Florida today:

“I want to echo the President’s important words today and condemn these heinous acts of terror in Orlando. This kind of violence and hate cannot be tolerated. In this terrible time, I will continue to keep the families of those in Orlando in my prayers."

“I have been in contact with the Department of Homeland Security and I have every confidence that the Federal government will investigate all aspects of this crime and its impact on national security. It is important to note that we must review the facts of these events carefully and not jump to conclusions prematurely. We must counter the ideology and hate of all those who want to do us harm, including those perpetuated by lone wolves."
