Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Mike Doyle (D-PA) released the following joint statement after the House of Representatives passed two communications and technology bills today:
“Today the House passed two commonsense, bipartisan bills to improve public health data and strengthen our communications networks. The first bill will incorporate maternal mortality and morbidity data into the Federal Communication Commission’s health mapping platform to better understand how access to broadband can improve our country’s response to maternal challenges and, ultimately, save mothers’ lives. The second bill requires the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the FCC to revamp and improve their efforts to collectively oversee our airwaves. We’re proud of the work that went into these bills and look forward to them becoming law.”
The House of Representatives passed the following two bills:
H.R. 1218, the “Data Mapping to Save Moms’ Lives Act,” was introduced by Reps. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL). The bill would require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to integrate data related to maternal mortality and morbidity into the agency’s Mapping Broadband Health in America platform, with consultation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bill passed on the House Floor by a vote of 409-11.
H.R. 2501, the “Spectrum Coordination Act,” was introduced by Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL). This bill would require the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the FCC to update their memorandum of understanding on spectrum coordination entered into in January 2003. The bill passed on the House Floor by a vote of 418-6.
Both bills passed out of the Energy and Commerce Committee in November 2021.
