Johnson: Jay man pleads guilty after 'deadly violence forever changed a Delaware County family'

A Jay man pleaded guilty to second degree murder and assault with the attempt to commit murder in Indian Country.

According to an April 7 Department of Justice news release from the Northern District of Oklahoma, Christopher Weeley, 42, admitted to killing his own mother in the chest and shooting another family member twice during a domestic violence incident in March 2021 in Delaware County.

"Christopher Weeley's acts of deadly violence forever changed a Delaware County family," U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson said in the release. "My thoughts are with the surviving victim as she struggles to recover from the shooting and with the entire family as this case moves through the justice system. I encourage any family experiencing violence to seek assistance from law enforcement and victim service agencies who can help provide critical safety information and resources."

While responding to a home in Jay March 6, 2021, a Delaware County Sheriff's Deputy was notified shots had been fired at the house. The news release stated that when the deputy arrived at the home, he found Weeley's mother on the floor and a second victim suffering from gunshot wounds to her stomach and lower back on the couch.

Weeley was found about an hour later, but refused to obey law enforcement commands, resisted arrest and ended up having to be subdued before he was arrested, the release noted. He later told investigators where he ditched the gun.

Ed Gray, FBI special agent in charge of the Oklahoma City field office, called Weeley's attack something "a household should never experience." According to the release, Gray added he hoped the family found some comfort in knowing Weeley's "heinous crime will not go unpunished."
