Murray Commemorates 125th Anniversary of 1890 Law Establishing Land-Grant HBCUs

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Aug. 30, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Senator Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released the following statement recognizing the 125th anniversary of the Morrill Act of 1890, which led to the creation of 19 Historically Black Federal land-grant educational institutions.

“The signing of the Second Morrill Act in 1890 paved the way for Historically Black Colleges and Universities to become centers of opportunity, innovation, and academic achievement for the African American community and our nation. These land-grant institutions have contributed to our nation’s agricultural strength and their graduates have propelled our country and economy forward. Now and in the future, HBCUs will be a critical force in helping more students get the education and training they need to take on - and create - the jobs of the 21st century."
