(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), the top Democrat on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released the following statement on investments in tackling mental illness and substance abuse that were included in President Barack Obama’s FY17 budget proposal.
“I’ve heard far too many stories about neighbors, friends, and loved ones who struggled with mental illness and substance use and didn’t get the help they needed. We can and must do better. I’m pleased that the Administration has proposed steps to tackle these challenges, including identifying and treating mental illness early, preventing suicide, and expanding treatment for opioid addiction. I’m hopeful Democrats and Republicans will be able to work together to advance these commonsense investments in strengthening mental health and substance abuse treatment for the families and communities we serve."
