Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg delivered an opening statement on May 8 at a field hearing in Fort Branch, Indiana, focusing on the future of the U.S. mining industry. The event was hosted by Vincennes University.

The hearing addressed current challenges and opportunities for miners and mine operators as well as regulatory changes affecting the sector. The House Education and Workforce Committee manages federal programs concerning education, labor, health, and workforce development, according to the official website.

"I would like to thank Vincennes University for hosting today’s hearing. It is great to be at an institution that is educating tomorrow’s leaders in the fields of firefighting, manufacturing, workplace safety, and mining," Walberg said during his prepared remarks. He went on to discuss executive orders issued under President Trump aimed at strengthening domestic mining production and noted recent funding initiatives: "Acting on these executive orders, the Department of Energy recently announced nearly $100 million in funding as part of its Mine of the Future initiative, with $80 million going toward the development and commercialization of advanced mining technology."

Walberg also referenced actions taken by Congress regarding mine safety regulations: "Last July, members of this Committee sent a letter to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requesting that it revise the overly burdensome rule on respirable crystalline silica issued by the Biden-Harris administration in 2024." He highlighted ongoing efforts such as MSHA's Compliance Assistance in Safety and Health program launched in July 2025.

The committee influences policy on issues such as student loans and worker protections while serving with jurisdiction over education and labor matters, according to its official website.

Walberg concluded his statement by emphasizing cooperation between government agencies and private companies: "Collaboration between government and the private sector leads to safer workplaces, an educated workforce, and a stronger mining industry."
