Murray Statement on “Shameful” Rollback of Protections for Transgender Workers by Trump Administration

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Oct. 5, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) - Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, today issued the following statement on reports Attorney General Jeff Sessions has rolled back protections for transgender workers from discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“This is yet another shameful attack on workers and the LGBTQ community from an Administration that has already made very clear it will do nothing to stand up and protect them," said Murray. “The Trump Administration should be fighting to protect the rights of all-including transgender Americans-but sadly, this is clearly not the case.

“With this latest action, Jeff Sessions continues to confirm the deep fears we had with his nomination to serve as Attorney General-that he would seek to undermine civil rights, rollback protections for the most vulnerable, and so much more. I am going to fight back against this and every other attempt by this Administration to rollback worker protections and civil rights."
