(Washington, D.C.) - Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, today issued the following statement on Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ decision to rescind guidance outlining rights for students and workers with disabilities.
“I’m deeply disappointed in Secretary DeVos’ decision to rescind guidance meant to protect students and workers with disabilities without any explanation about the impacts this will have," said Murray. “Given her extremely troubling record on standing up for people with disabilities, I urge Secretary DeVos to stop creating chaos and confusion, clarify how this decision effects workers with disabilities, and explain to students, parents, and teachers how she plans to protect the rights of students with disabilities."
“But let me be very clear, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Rehabilitation Act remain the law of the land," continued Murray. “Secretary DeVos and the Trump Administration must ensure discrimination against people with disabilities is not tolerated and children with disabilities are provided a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment."
