(Washington, D.C.) -Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued a statement following a vote in the House of Representatives to pass the ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017 (H.R. 620) which would undermine important protections for people with disabilities.
“This anti-civil rights legislation is a national embarrassment that would chip away at important protections that have prevented discrimination against millions of workers, students, children, and families for over a quarter of a century. The Americans with Disabilities Act has not only benefited people with disabilities, it has benefited the nation by helping to ensure we all have the opportunity to participate fully in our communities. This bill is a harmful step backward for people with disabilities, for civil rights, and for our country. I view this bill as an absolute nonstarter and I will continue to oppose it at every turn."
