Murray Slams Trump Administration’s Latest Move to Encourage Discrimination and Undermine Health Care

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on May 24, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and, Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s proposal to scrap key health care protections that prevent and respond to discrimination.

“This is yet another blatantly harmful, discriminatory, and wrong policy from the Trump Administration," said Senator Murray. “Patients don’t need the ideological judgment of President Trump, Vice President Pence, or anyone else for that matter-they need to know that when they seek the health care they need, they won’t be turned away because of who they are."

“I’m going to keep fighting back against efforts to turn back the clock on people’s rights, and making sure everyone in this country is able to get the health care they need without interference from politicians who think their personal beliefs are more important than patients’ lives."

The Trump Administration’s proposal would undermine Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, a key civil rights law that ensures people seeking health care aren’t discriminated against. The changes would scrap protections barring discrimination against transgender people, as well as women and those who already face barriers to care.
