Senator Murray on Spike in Uninsured Rate: “Republicans’ Number One Health Care Priority Has Been to Make Things Worse”

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Sept. 10, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued the following statement in response to new census data showing the uninsured rate jumped from 7.9 percent to 8.5 percent from 2017 to 2018 with nearly 2 million more people going without insurance during the year.

“People across the country are struggling to get the care they need to live, and Republicans’ number one health care priority has been to make things worse. Nearly two million more people went without health care last year following President Trump and Republicans’ relentless attacks on families’ health care, and millions of others are currently at risk of losing their health care and protections for pre-existing conditions because of Republicans’ partisan lawsuit. Republicans need to stop treating families’ lives like a political game, stop trying to take away patients’ health care, and start working with Democrats to undo the severe damage they’ve caused."
