Senator Murray Statement on SCOTUS Ruling in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on July 1, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue.

“As public schools across the country face devastating budget shortfalls and increased costs due to coronavirus, it’s especially devastating to see that the conservative wing of the Supreme Court has issued a decision that will make it easier for states to take money away from public schools. State school tax credit programs are private school voucher schemes-and like the Montana program upheld in today’s ruling, only serve to divert much-needed funds away from our public education system in favor of private schools with little oversight or accountability. Despite today’s disappointing ruling and Secretary DeVos’ continued efforts to advance her privatization agenda, I’ll keep fighting to ensure that every child has access to a quality public education."
