On April 12, Administrator Power spoke with Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. They discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ukraine, the challenges in ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches communities on the frontlines of the war, as well as the Ukrainian government’s needs as they work to deliver essential services. The Administrator underscored her admiration for the many courageous Ukrainians who are risking their lives every day across every sector of the government including media, civil society, and the economy to support their communities and preserve Ukraine’s democracy.
Prime Minister Shmyhal highlighted the acute need for economic support, housing, and access to essential services for internally displaced Ukrainians. They also discussed the needs of those in areas liberated from Russian control or returning back to their homes after having fled the country, as they face lost livelihoods, damage to homes and infrastructure among other challenges. Administrator Power spoke about USAID’s ongoing assistance as well as how the Agency’s development programs have continued to ramp up to respond to cyber attacks and threats to the energy sector, address disinformation, support small businesses and the agriculture sector, document human rights violations, meet essential health needs, and support the continued functioning of local and national government entities.
