Announcing the Venues: BLM’s Artist in Residence to Tour Six Different States, Hold Workshops, Perform Original Student-Written Compositions

The Bureau of Land Management’s Artist in Residence program has announced the venues where Native American jazz trumpeter Delbert Anderson and his ensemble D’DAT will teach in music workshops and then perform in concert to celebrate America’s public lands.

As part of the Painted Mountains Tour, Anderson and D’DAT will visit six National Conservation Area or Monument sites, interact with local Indigenous people, examine each site’s geography and connection to Native American culture, and then hold workshops with local participants to write new compositions based on that research.

Anderson is a faculty member at San Juan College in Farmington, NM, and bases his music on traditional spinning songs from Native Americans. The resulting sound is rhythmic, multi-tonal, and rich in texture.
