FAA’s Griffin: Grant to Bowman Field allows airport to 'keep that proud tradition'

A general aviation airport in Kentucky is getting almost $300,000 to improve its facilities and further sustainability plans, courtesy of President Joseph Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced recently.

Bowman Field airport, in Jefferson County, Ky., near Louisville, will receive $295,000 in BIL funding for Fiscal Year 2022, the FAA reported April 26. FAA Associate Administrator of Airports Shannetta Griffin announced the investment during a visit to the 100-year-old airport, saying the funds will allow it "to keep that proud tradition.”

“For a more than century, Bowman Field has helped the aviation industry and this community take off and grow," Griffin said during the visit, according to the FAA, "and it still plays that important role for this region."

Bowman Field, called a "reliever airport" for Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport by the FAA, may invest the BIL money in its "runways, taxiways, safety and sustainability projects, as well as terminal, airport-transit connections and roadway projects," according to the announcement. The BIL's airport-infrastructure program allocates $20 billion to U.S. airports; those in Kentucky are slated to receive approximately $40 million in the next five years, the FAA reports.

Funding for infrastructure improvements at smaller municipal airports is part of the Biden Administration's focus on providing access to federal resources to underserved, low-income and rural areas, the report states.

"President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is sending historic investments to revitalize and rebuild small and municipal communities across the country," the FAA states in the report.

"Supporting Americans living in these areas remains a top priority for the Biden Administration," the FAA reports, "and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law delivers on the President’s promises to provide affordable high-speed Internet, safe roads and bridges, clean drinking water, modern wastewater systems, reliable and affordable electricity, and good-paying jobs in every community."
