The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded nearly $1 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to 99 airports in 47 states and two territories to fund improvements in security checkpoints, baggage systems, ground transportation and more.
Projects also include increasing terminal sustainability, improving accessibility and improving aging air traffic control towers, a Feb. 27 news release reported.
“We're funding improvements at 99 airports in communities large and small - creating a better experience for passengers and supporting more local jobs,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a post on Twitter.
Among grants that will construct or expand terminal facilities are $10.8 million to Des Moines International Airport in Des Moines, Iowa, to replace the 1948 terminal and $29 million to Salt Lake City International Airport in Salt Lake City, Utah, for phase four of the new airport that includes 16 new gates, according to the release.
Grants awarded to airports to refurbish air traffic control towers include $500,000 to Chennault International Airport in Lake Charles, La., for the replacement of the exterior metal panel rain screen on the tower; $4.5 million to Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph, Mo., to relocate the existing tower above the 100-year flood stage, replace aging infrastructure, achieve compliance with ADA requirements and improve energy efficiency; and $2 million to Albany International Airport in Albany, N.Y., to rehabilitate the air traffic control tower, the release reported.
Among grants that will help with increasing terminal sustainability are $6 million to Portland International Airport in Portland, Ore., to convert the terminal heating system from fossil fuel boilers to an electric-powered heat pump; $15 million to Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania, to fund a portion of the Terminal Energy Optimization Program to replace and upgrade pre-condition air units and ground power units at 25 gates and $15 million to improve accessibility; $35 million to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas to fund the second phase of the installation of the airport’s Zero Carbon Electric Central Utility Plant, which will be powered by renewable energy; and $8.6 million to Syracuse Regional Airport in Syracuse, N.Y., to increase energy efficiency and cut emissions, according to the release.
“Americans deserve the best airports in the world, and with demand for air travel surging back, this funding to improve the passenger experience comes at the right time,” Buttigieg said in the release. “These grants will make it faster and easier to check your bags, get through security and find your gate, all while creating jobs and supporting local economies.”
