A man was arrested March 7 at Boston Logan International Airport for attempting to open an emergency exit door while on board a flight from Newark to Boston.

The man, identified as Francisco Severo Torres, 33, was restrained by crew members and other passengers before being arrested by law enforcement when they arrived in Boston, according to a March 6 Justice Department news release. The incident is under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

"Unruly behavior on airplanes is dangerous and unacceptable," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Twitter. " FAA's zero tolerance policy has helped drive this down dramatically from its 2021 peak, but even one case is too many. FAA is investigating here."

Torres was reportedly observed attempting to open the emergency exit door while on board a flight, The Associated Press reported. Following this, a flight attendant secured the door and emergency slide and alerted the captain and flight crew.

Torres' behavior then escalated, and he began making paranoid statements before allegedly lunging at a flight attendant with what appeared to be a broken metal spoon, according to The Associated Press. The situation was eventually brought under control with the assistance of several passengers and crew members.

Torres has been charged with one count of interfering and attempting to interfere with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon, according to the Justice Department news release. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of life in prison, as well as up to five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

A video capturing the unfolding events was obtained by CNN, reportedly filmed by a fellow passenger on board the flight.
