The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration will expand the deadline for potential applicants to apply to the America’s Marine Highway Program until June.
Along with the application extension, there will be an additional $14.8 million that can be applied for and brings the total amount of funding for the America’s Marine Highway Program to $39.8 million, according to an April 25 news release.
“Under President Biden’s leadership, we are making a once-in-a-generation investment in our ports and intermodal infrastructure to move goods faster, strengthen supply chain resiliency and reduce the climate impacts of port operations,” Acting Maritime Administrator Lucinda Lessley said in the release.
The release added the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocated these funds to expand the nation's navigable waterways in order to "relieve landside congestion, provide new and efficient transportation options and increase the productivity of the surface transportation system."
The release stated funding to the marine highway program is available through competitive grants and will be awarded to public and private organizations to accomplish the mission of expanding navigable waterways. The DOT also aims to create more sustainable jobs by expanding the number of available positions on waterways and related projects.
According to the release, grant applications are due June 17 by 5 p.m. EDT.
