Health and Human Services Inspector General's Resignation

The following press release was published by the United States Committee on Finance Ranking Member’s News on March 4, 2003. It is reproduced in full below.

Sen. Chuck Grassley issued the following comment regarding the resignation today of Janet Rehnquist, the Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services. Last October,

Sen. Grassley requested a review by the General Accounting Office of whether significant personnel changes at the HHS IG’s office will result in weaker policing of health care fraud. He has been briefed by the GAO on its findings.

“This is the right step. The inspector general job wasn’t a good fit for her abilities. I certainly wish her well in her next position. It’s very important that we get a bulldog for the taxpayers on the job in the HHS IG office right away. The department handles $530 billion in spending every year. I intend to be very involved in determining who will be taking over."
