Grassley on Tenet Healthcare Replacing Its Top Lawyer

The following press release was published by the United States Committee on Finance Ranking Member’s News on Dec. 23, 2003. It is reproduced in full below.

Tenet Healthcare Corp. named Peter Urbanowicz as its general counsel yesterday. Urbanowicz, who was deputy general counsel of the U.S. Department of Health and HumanServices, was hired to replace Christi Sulzbach, Tenet’s former chief corporate officer, complianceofficer and general counsel, who stepped down in November. Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of theCommittee on Finance, made the following comment on this development.

“Maybe a new lawyer at the top will give Tenet better counsel. Tenet says it’s changing, but I’m skeptical. On one hand Tenet told me it wants to be known for both the quality of its care andits people. On the other hand Tenet argued in court recently that it is not responsible for whathappens in its hospitals, that it has no duty to its patients. The company can’t have it both ways. Itsnew general counsel should know that."
