Statement of U.S. Senator Max Baucus Regarding the President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on Jan. 7, 2005. It is reproduced in full below.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) Today, U.S. Senator Max Baucus, Ranking Member of the Senate

Finance Committee, issued the following statement regarding the announcement of the

President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform.

“My former colleagues John Breaux and Connie Mack bring a wealth of knowledge and

expertise to the President’s Advisory panel. However, this panel will face enormous challenges

as they move ahead. A major change from our income tax to another type of tax involves

enormous complexities and difficulties. We learned this lesson in the 1995 and 1996 debates on

fundamental tax reform. So, what we need to do is work together to look at significant and

meaningful simplification of our current system. This is an achievable goal. The advisory panel

can serve an important role in soliciting ideas and building public support for Congress to

significantly simplify the tax code." (WASHINGTON, D.C.) Today, U.S. Senator Max Baucus, Ranking Member of the SenateFinance Committee, issued the following statement regarding the announcement of thePresident’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform.
