Grassley Meets With Trade Ambassador, Agrees U.S. Must Stand Firm in Doha Talks

The following press release was published by the United States Committee on Finance Ranking Member’s News on June 22, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Committee on Finance, with jurisdiction over international trade, today met with United States Trade Representative Susan Schwab. It was their first meeting since the Senate confirmed Schwab on June 8.

“I met with Ambassador Schwab this morning to discuss the status of the Doha Round trade negotiations. I reiterated my position that we’ve put an ambitious agricultural offer on the table, and until our negotiating partners do likewise there’s no reason for us to offer anything new. I’m committed to seeing the Doha Round succeed, but I’m not going to settle for a minimalist outcome.

Ambassador Schwab indicated she feels the same way. She has my full confidence going into the next round of negotiations."
