Baucus Comments on Efforts to Fight Medicare Fraud

The following press release was published by the United States Committee on Finance Ranking Member’s News on May 9, 2007. It is reproduced in full below.

Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) commented late today on the announcement by the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services of dozens of arrests in an ongoing effort to fight Medicare fraud. Information about today’s announcement is online at http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2007/May/07_ag_339.html.

From Chairman Baucus:

“Federal health dollars are just too scarce to lose to fraud and abuse in Medicare. I’m glad to see the Justice Department taking this new, more aggressive stance against scams that endanger Medicare patients and that rob all taxpayers who contribute to America’s health care programs. The reports coming out of south Florida about durable medical fraud have been troubling, to say the least, and this problem seems ripe for a crackdown. The Finance Committee will monitor this ongoing effort with great interest."

Baucus recently expressed concern about reports of durable medical equipment fraud in south Florida, and noted the Finance Committee’s commitment to stopping Medicare fraud.
