Hatch, Wyden to Hold Finance Hearing on the 2017 Filing Season and IRS Operations

The following press release was published by the United States Committee on Finance Ranking Member’s News on March 30, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON - Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) will convene a hearing on Thursday, April 6, to examine IRS operations for the 2017 filing season and beyond. The hearing, titled “The 2017 Tax Filing Season: Internal Revenue Service Operations and the Taxpayer Experience," will take place at 10:00 a.m. in Room 215 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

“With the 2017 tax filing season nearing its close, taxpayers across the country are rapidly working to meet their filing obligations before the April deadline. This hearing will examine how the agency charged with collecting their taxes is handling new threats and protecting their private information in the filing process," Hatch said. “It’s essential we conduct proper oversight to ensure that the IRS is taking appropriate steps to help prevent identity theft and operating as efficiently and effectively as possible. And with this hearing, members will have the opportunity to examine the filing process at the IRS and the current safeguards that are in place to protect taxpayers. We will also hear from the Commissioner on the agency’s plans to further build advanced IT infrastructure systems aimed to enhance customer services and reduce fraud and theft in the digital age."

“The IRS is faced with crippling budget restraints and is under constant cyber security threats," said Wyden. “Without the proper funding and support from Congress and this administration, the IRS will be unable to effectively meet the needs of America’s taxpayers. This hearing will highlight Commissioner Koskinen’s goals for protecting taxpayer information and improving taxpayer service while we understand how Congress and members of the committee can best support him and his operation."
