Wyden Statement on Treasury Secretary Mnuchin's Refusal to Comply with Subpoena for Trump Tax Returns

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on May 17, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement in response to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s refusal to comply with Chairman Richard Neal’s, D-Mass., subpoena of President Donald Trump’s tax returns:

“The Trump administration views itself as above the law, and the House of Representatives should take swift legal action to force the administration to comply with Chairman Neal’s request for President Trump’s tax returns. Secretary Mnuchin’s refusal to follow the law rests on a hidden opinion from the Office of Legal Counsel. Given Attorney General Barr’s track record of providing President Trump’s personal legal defense, it’s critical that Congress immediately review the justification behind this unprecedented action."
